Anyone getting 3DS?

So I've acquired a 3DS. No games aside from what's preloaded onto it (more on that later), but still...I have a 3DS.

So you boot up the system and after some configuring and whatnot, you're straight into a basic 3D image. From what I've tried so far, handling 3D actually isn't that easy. You really have to be in the perfect position to get any sort of result. But I dunno if that's just me; you can't really test the 3D extensively right out of the box, even with the preloaded games.

As far as the system itself goes, it really struck me as a handheld Wii. Which is good. Miis are back and are as cool as ever, if not more so. Also, before I forget, for the sake of memory the system actually comes with an 2GB SD card, a sweet little bonus.

The cameras are back, and they're better than ever. Lag is barely noticeable, and the outer cameras can also be used to take 3D pictures. What does means, I've yet to figure out, but still a nifty feature nonetheless.

Now, the preloaded games. The system comes with six cards which can be used with an app known as AR Cards. I spent most of my time playing this; you lay one of the cards on a flat surface, let the camera register it, and indulge in various 3D minigames like archery and fishing, all of which end in a boss battle with a dragon. You could also take pictures of the other Nintendo character cards or of your Miis. A nifty little trinket.

Then there's Face Raiders, a more basic minigame in which you take a picture of your face and shoot off invaders with said face. Nothing more, nothing less.

Now, the crux of the debate. Maybe it's just me, but I had the 3D turned on for roughly 45 minutes...and two hours later my eyes are still a little sore. I really don't know how this will bode for everyone or in the future, but either way, the thought's still worrying.

And many of the features, like the Internet Browser and the E-Shop, are not yet available. Will be provided through updates later on.

So, overall, I approve, but wearily. It'll probably take a good while for it to really grow on me.

Glad to have helped.

Another two cents, regarding regular DS games. A con in the fact that they're actually noticeably blurrier than in older DS models, likely due to the 3D screen or something; a pro in the fact that a circle pad (think PSP's, but bigger) seems to indeed be compatible with older DS games. Now, I've only tried Mario Kart, but if this holds true for other games, such as Mario 64...it'd be a large improvement.

My thoughts:

3D was really easy for me to get into. Maybe I just got lucky, and have always casually held the DS in the proper position for 3D? Dunno. I have to take of my glasses for it to work at all, though. I found that the ideal position for 3D using the built-in software was somewhere in the top 1/4, but had to bring it down to about midway for Pilotwings.

The AR games were pretty cool; my family was watching over my shoulder with their jaws on the floor. I'm quite impressed with how well they work. One little nitpick is that it only really works if you have a light source directly overhead of the table; otherwise, if you block the light with your body, it loses sight of the card. I'm definitely interested in seeing this feature used in a more complex game. It'd be awesome if you could, say, buy a pack of specialized AR cards from the store, download software from the 3DS shop, and play a tabletop card game with them. Even cooler if you can use local multiplayer so that each player has his/her own "frame" to view the game through.

3D photos are nice; they're subtle enough that they work very well. There have been some complaints about the quality of the 3D effect, but I haven't noticed anything wrong.

Troy's description of Face Raiders really doesn't do it justice, IMO; it's a really solid little minigame. The enemies close in all around your head; you've got to rotate around to find them before they fly away, breaking holes in the fabric of reality, launching debris at you along the way. Moving quickly is necessary to score well; there's a combo system, but it's rather unforgiving. You get double points for hitting enemies in the mouth, which, depending on their distance from you, can be really tough to do consistently. The surround-sound speakers are put to great use; you can easily tell where the enemies are based on where their laughter seems to be coming from.

Online play has improved by leaps and bounds since the last DS (and even the Wii). The 3DS has its own dedicated friends list; no need to swap FCs for every single game anymore. The system notifies you when your friends are online, which I'm sure will be really nifty once I get a game that's online enabled ^^;

Pilotwings is pretty cool. Not too tough so far, but I've only played through the first two difficulty "classes". It's not going to blow anyone away with all-new gameplay concepts, but it does flight really well. There's an interesting sense of progress as you play through the game; beating missions unlocks new kinds of targets to find in Free Flight mode, and finding targets in Free Flight mode unlocks new aircraft and lets you spend more time in a single Free Flight session. It's not really exciting, per se, but it's a great way to relax. The 3D actually enhances the game, too; when you're trying to hit faraway targets, the added sense of depth is a great help.

In any case, played it for about two hours straight, which took my battery to about 50% or so on brightness level 3/5. My eyes are indeed a little sore, but the general consensus from people who have had it for a while (reviewers, etc) is that it gets easier on the eyes with time.

By the way, my FC is 4124 5001 7966, but again, I don't have any online-enabled games so there won't be much interaction going on. ^^;

Yay! I obtained one as well yesterday.

My eyes only started really hurting when I started messing with the 3D Depth Slider while looking at the game. I was playing pilotwings and just sliding the thing up and down really fast.. which... I do NOT recommend you do unless if you enjoy headaches.

I'm upgrading from a DS FAT so the blurry screen thing? Haven't noticed really. I've been playing Pokemon Black on this for a while and I did see some stuff that looked like the image had been compressed, but I didn't know if I just missed the artifacting before because of the DS Fat's dark screen. Either way, playing old DS games on the 3DS works totally fine.

The only thing that's missing for the older DS games on the 3DS is that the street pass features don't work while you're playing older DS games.... AND it seems like the Street Pass stuff only works while your system is closed?

Two of my roommates also got 3ds systems and I didn't ever connect with them via street pass until we both closed our systems and waited a few minutes. (aka about a minute or so)

I do like the feature where you can send/accept local friend invites though. So if you and your friend are in the same room you don't have to still tell each other your friend codes. It's a nice touch.

Overall I'm really happy with mine and it's been a really neat experience so far.

Also, there's an app for the android that just displays the AR cards on your screen so you don't have to carry the AR cards with you (and risk damaging them) if you have an Android Smart Phone.

And Lastly, Lavos I added ye. My code = 4768-7448-6612

Nah, it definitely works when the system is open. I got my first StreetPass tag today on a train while playing Pilotwings.
