Not a full fledged review, 'cause I'm only 30-something stars in. First thing I'm gonna say: this game is a level pack for the original Galaxy. Really, that's what it is. But it's a damn amazing level pack. See, the thing that makes Galaxy 2 so great, I think, is that it really puts a large emphasis on sheer gameplay. It's really like an original Mario title in this gen. That's what it feels like. Now, let's get the bad outta the way. It's a very linear game. The levels play out similarly to those in its predecessor...not much exploration. The hub's simple too. And many galaxies have as few as a single star to initially be found, though this inevitably paves the way for more galaxies on the whole, so it's really give or take. Now for the good. The gameplay is fucking amazing, and I'm not lying. It's a lot harder than its predecessor, which wasn't a cakewalk in its own right. Yoshi's really awesome as well (even if he's broken...). The levels are unique and, more importantly, fun. There's some homage galaxies too, but I won't spoil those... Also. There's a lotta quirky replay value additions. Like...hidden stars, obviously. And Prankster Comets are back too, although each galaxy has a Comet Medal that must be found before they show up in that particular galaxy this time around. And Luigi's back too, but his role was tweaked as well. About 25 stars in, he'll show up in some galxies and just give you the option of playing as him. Get the star as him and you'll unlock a ghost, kinda like Mario Kart. It's really interesting. Oh, and the music, design, graphics...those are all awesome too. So long story short, you owe it to yourself to buy Galaxy 2. You won't be disappointed. |

I completed it myself yesterday. Man, that last star was insane. Could be the hardest official Mario level ever. This game was a work of art though. It did everything right. I think because both the developers and the players had gotten over the initial shock of the gravity/planetoids element, the devs had free reign to let their imaginations run wild, with beautiful results. As for the music... I think I may have a new favorite video game soundtrack. My personal favorites were Puzzle Plank and of course Koopa's Road. And the theme for Spoiler: click to toggle is just awesome.I find myself wishing for Super Mario Galaxy 3, but I'm not sure Nintendo can top this one. Bravo. |

It is orgasmic, isn't it. I've beaten the last level a coupla times now, it gets to the point where you realize it's not actually that hard but the lack of checkpoints make it frustrating as hell. The soundtrack is indeed amazing. My favorites were Bowser's levels (as well as the last one), the final battle theme (which unfortunately is about 2.5 times longer than the actual fight), the Sky Station theme, and the Megahammer battle theme, along with everything you mentioned. Side note: it's kinda odd that the Bowser Jr. battles were better than the Bowser ones. Especially the Boomsday Bunker. That was probably the best boss in either Galaxy game, I think. But yeah, amazing game, definitely. Edited by Troy, Jun 28 2010, 03:14 PM.
