Holy fuck. My sexbox got so much lovin' today from the Microsoft conference. Two new Halo games (no Master Chief, but they still look mighty impressive), Metal Gear Solid, and a handfull of other games were announced. They all look spectacular. BUT. Highlight of the show. Nay, the year. NAY, gaming LIFE. This thing called Natal.

It's kinda like a sensor bar that you can fit just above your TV, and it fully recognises all 3D movements and voices. It's got advanced facial recognition, depth perception.. The fucking works. It's easiest if you see a video to demonstrate just what it's capable of, but I think this quote sums it up nicely:

"You won't just wind up on the sofa using a bunch of preset waggle commnds"

Nintendo got prawned. They pulled the motion control too early, and now Xbox is slamming them. This looks like not just a massive advance for gaming, but a massive advance for technology.. You know that scene in Minority report where he's manipulating a bunch of menus infront of him? It's like that, but without gloves. Without anything. Just a little camera and a shit load of technology. MMMMMPH I AM EXCITED ALLRIGHT!

http://kotaku.com/5274317/microsoft-makes-...ne=true&s=x sums it up better.

Sums it up EVEN BETTER

I just have to hope that it doesn't become a gimmick, like the Wii did. It's got the potential for hardcore games to still be played with this (the racing shows that. She was shifting gears for crying out loud!) but it'd be far too easy for people to just bring out more and more shitty games..

There was this incredible bit of the show, which had a video of a woman fully interating with an on screen character, by the name of Milo. He spoke to her, recognising her, and using her name. She spoke back. They formed a conversation, and it wasn't one pushed by him ("Oh, my schoolwork is not going well...") it was one pushed by her ("You ok Milo? You look sad?")
Milo threw some goggles at her, and her instant rection was to try and catch them. Peter Mollenyoiuxuxuaisd (yes I can't spell his name.. But it's that Fable guy) explained that EVERYONE who had played this short demo had done that same thing. She was so involved with what was happening, it became instinct.
Once she had these goggles, she reached into a pond. It showed her reflection dancing on the surface of the water, and she touched the water.. It reacted perfectly to her movements. It could sense when she wasn't reaching for it and when it was. It was simply astounding. And then there was this incredible bit...

She drew a fish on a piece of paper, and lifted it up to the camera. Only very briefly, just as if you were handing it to someone. As she dragged it past the camera, the image got scanned. Milo collected the piece of paper from where she had put it... well, put it into the TV, and it had her fish on it, from just half a second of scanning.

I can't find any video footage of this "Milo" dude, so you'll have to find it yourself. But I insist you do. It had me shaking.

If Nintendo don't pull out something astounding tomorow... I will be a total 360 fanatic.

Baby, wait, I didn't mean to say "nightmare"!

Watched it on G4. Ahh why didn't I get a 360 ;_;

This looks freaking amazing. Once I see this concept used in full games I just might be persuaded to save up for one... assuming the Natal unit isn't hundreds of dollars itself =P

Looks amazing enough. Then again, the Wii Remote's motion technology did at first too...just saying it could easily go either way.

Having said that, the fucking potential of the thing is undeniable.

But you have to keep in mind: Microsoft, unlike Nintendo, has half a brain. So knowing this, it will probably be used to its full potential.

I was thinking about it last night, and there's not actually many games it could be used for... First off, any sort of walking would be damn near impossible. I mean.. even on that racing game that was shown, odds are she isn't controlling the throttle and it was just constantly jammed down.

So for this to be used in "hardcore" games, they would need to be on rails.. which can totally ruin the freedom that more and more games are striving towards these days.

And then I got to thinking about which games would be nearly impossible to make with this...

Most FPSs
RPGs
Sports
Racing (it couldn't be complicated racing, at least. Hell, even MK couldn't be played with this)
Adventure

Pretty much every genre EVER except arcade games could be tricky to make.

But I'm hyped for some sort of fighting game. Street Fighter V? Having to yell Hadouken? Spot on xD

There's Milo... I think I was a bit starry eyed the first time I saw this. Now I'm just quite scared. Reminds me of the Matrix and Terminator xD

Milo = Skynet.

Mmhmm. So capitalizing on a new, less demanding audience to rake in tons more isn't using your brain. Yuuuup.

Double post. Ninty's conference today. Definite improvement over last year.

-New Super Mario Bros. Wii due out this year.

-Wii Fit Plus too.

-Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story too (FINALLY).

-Super Mario Galaxy 2 in 2010 (a welcome WTF).

-Metroid: Other M too.

...and other stuff, like Golden Sun DS, which I don't really care about lol.

I forgot to post my thoughts on this matter! Here's what I had down at GNF:

HOO boy! Nintendo's conference is over, and I have.. mixed reactions.

They didn't really announce a lot. There's gonna be New Super Mario Bros. Wii which looks.. fun, but I won't buy it. They announced Golden Sun DS which.. well, I've never been into that series, so I won't be buying it. But I'm sure fans are pleased. They also announced something which was so totally unremarkable I've forgotten its name. But it's one of those things you hook onto your index finger when you're in hospital. A sensor of some sorts, I dunno, I totally skipped this part of the presentation.

But then, out of nowhere, this chick wanders onto the stage and said "Think you've got all the Mario you can handle?" and then shoved a trailer for Galaxy 2 into my eyes. It looks incredible. Galaxy was pretty much perfect, and this looks as it has stuck to the same formula. More huge bosses, more 2D sections (they were my favourite bits about Galaxy) and more shooting Mario through space with his chubby arms flailing. And then they've thrown a few Yoshi's in there. :D

And then there was some more warbling, where a new Resident Evil game was announced. That's nice.

But that was before the next big suprise: A new Metroid game! It looks astounding. This was the first part of the Nintendo show where I had that smile stretched across my face. It looks completely new, but at the same time so familiar. Exactly what Nintendo's good at doing. I'm only worried about the graphics at the moment. Bits of that trailer look quite gamecube.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QVuRKxrh3XM

I am excited.

Unfortunatly, it's not a massive news bundle, and I don't think it was quite as exciting as Microsofts conference. Nintendo spent too much boasting about how they're selling loads of consoles to my mum and showing us old games, and whoring Wii Motion plus.. But still, it's more than I was expecting!
