Is Nintendo still failing in your opinion?

Well, everyone was saying how Nintendo has been going downhill lately. They haven't been pleasing fans as much as before, and half-assing games, not caring so much about the fans but more about the money. But lately, the posts around here have been increasingly positive about Nintendo. For example, everyone here who bought a DSi seems to be really pleased, and Troy just excitedly said about how the G/S/C remakes are possibly going to be announced. So, I thought I'd open up a discussion: is Nintendo starting to regain their former glory? Are they still not doing as much for the fans as they should?

Considering Nintendo hasn't put up a game that was remotely appealing to me since Mario Kart Wii (and the last game before that I can't even remember), yes.
"After a great workout, you'll happily go hit the weight room, or add extra miles, or eat spinach and broccoli. But what will you do when you're feeling like crap, or all your friends are going out, or it's pouring rain, or you're running poorly? To keep striving over the course of years, you need to smooth out the natural highs and lows of your desire, so that you have a constant and unrelenting force that drives you off the sofa and out to run. Every day. Twice."

imo nintendo is still failing, if

1) Nintendo either makes one system friendcode, then everything from there is linked, or get rid of them all together then they are still failing in online play (not to mention the lag on somwhat promising WiFi games like Brawl)
2) They release a good game for Wii, the only game that is coming out that I am considering getting is call The Conduit, and that is an FPS from Sega

pretty much just agree with everyone. The DSi is a good system, but that's just because the DS itself is a good system, this is just like a cleaned up version with a couple extra bells and whistles, not too much to be really excited atm but looks promising

REPORT CARD TIME. I've always wanted to do this. Long post ahead...

Wii (2009): Ok, let's face it. The Wii...has been doing fairly shitty as of late. MadWorld, The Conduit, Excitebots, and Punch Out are the only four good games I can really think of that came out/are coming out for the system this year. Step up your game, Ninty. Show what the Wii could do. I recently played Super Mario Galaxy for a little bit, and it showed that the Wii is capable of just as much as the 360 and the PS3 from a technical standpoint. Now just get your head out of your casual ass, Ninty, and utilize that potential. I give the Wii a D+.

DS (2009):
The DS has been faring quite well as of late. With the launch of the DSi, the software has been following suit, with games such as Platinum, Chinatown Wars, Rhythm Heaven and Henry Hatsworth, among others, having been released recently, and Mario and Luigi 3, the new Mystery Dungeon, Zelda Spirit Tracks, and the G/S remakes, again among others, on the way. Not too bad. Seems like Ninty's really going full force on the handheld side of things...maybe simply as to accommodate the DSi? Either way, the DS's recent success is undeniable, and for that I gave it an A-

Downloadable Services (2009):
The latter half of 2008 proved amazing for WiiWare and the Virtual Console, showing releases such as Super Mario RPG, Megaman 9, World of Goo, and probably others I'm forgetting. What the hell happened? Ok, I can't blame Ninty as a whole...Japan (and I think Europe, too) has recently received Super Smash Bros., Majora's Mask, and (I believe) some new Sega-developed old-school sidescroller, similar to Megaman 9. Now why can't NOA be that competent? As for DSiWare, that's failing at the moment too, but considering how relatively close to launch it is still, I won't judge it just yet. So I give DLC a C.

Other:
Here's where the big criticisms come in. Online play's been around for three and a half years now, but it's barely any better. Why do friend codes still exist as they do? Why can't they just have a universal screenname for each console or something (wasn't that xan's idea? lol)? Not cool. And it's still funny how City Folk and The Conduit are the only two games to support the half-assed WiiSpeak...maybe even Ninty is realizing how big a fail that was. I could go on and on, but I'll just stop here and give the miscellaneous a D-.

Overall:
It's a mixed bag, really. On the one hand, the Wii is slacking off, and online play is still a huge fail. On the other, the DS is doing pretty well, almost to the point of striving, and DLC, while going through something of a slowdown right now, isn't all that terrible. So all things considered, I give Ninty as a whole a C...and to answer the original question, they're BORDERLINE failing.

Wow, I type too much...

i wouldn`t go too hard on your self with the typing thing.

first off i should say that i am posting this from my DSi.

second i agree with you totally, and it needed to be said. release smash bros. in NA and my mark for DLC would go up. Nintendo has the potential for some good games, but they remain a family company and seem to take that as they can`t come out with any games that take full advantage of their systems. Like games that use the Wiispeak,or another game for wii that lets you listen to music on your SD card (excite trucks, a launch game was the last to use it as far as i know).

Exactly. Ninty has created so much potential for themselves, but time and time again they neglect it. Excite Trucks had SD Card compatibility for music...why the hell couldn't Excitebots? Or even any other game for that matter. And, beyond the fact that WiiSpeak still isn't being used with current games, why can't Ninty release a firmware update to allow WiiSpeak compatibility with past titles? Ok, maybe that'd be a bit of a stretch, but still, they'd get a million brownie points from me if they did that.

What's up everybody? Got bored and went through my bookmarks and found this place. Been awhile.

And yes. I owned the Wii since release day and over the span of over 2 years, I bought 3 or 4 games. I sold it on eBay back in January for about $300. I don't really consider myself a hardcore gamer anymore, but imo anyone above the age of maybe 12 or 13 has any business owning one.

I also owned a DS since it's release and sold it last March for some extra pocket money. I enjoyed playing games like Mario Kart, Tony Hawks Sk8land, New SMB, Metroid Prime Hunters, Feel the Magic, Elite Beat Agents, and many others. But after the Wii came out, it seemed like Nintendo stopped making quality titles and I think the last game I bought for the system was in fact Elite Beat Agents back when it was released. I couldn't find any games that looked worth playing, and the future of it's games looked bleak. So I sold it.

I miss the old Nintendo.

Welcome back. ^.^

...I'd say the Wii is unfit for many hardcore gamers. It's barely fit for me...save for the VC and a few select games such as Mario Kart and Galaxy, I'd consider selling it. As for the DS, I could go on and on and on...maybe the pocket money might have been the better option for you, buut if it were me, I'd have definitely kept it. But to each his own.

I'd honestly say the only regret I have for selling the Wii is the fact I can't play any of my old Gamecube games. I always loved playing my older games for nostalgia sake, and thats the only thing I miss about it. I'll probably just own up and buy a $20 Gamecube somewhere because I'll never sell some of those older games. But with the DS, I just think they put out to many puzzle and "brain" games nowadays. Prior to the release of the Wii, Nintendo cared about the quality of games released on the DS. But since then, their idea of casual and innovative games has showed and has made the handheld so much less appealing to gamers like me. It used to be cool to own a DS because you could play all these awesome games. Now the only people I see playing them are either 8 or 80 lol. Sad but true.
