Growing up, I had my NES. Sure there was the great outdoors, but I didn't think of it as that great really. I was much more interested in what was going on in the mushroom kingdom.

I still have my NES hooked up in my bedroom. I still play my NES weekly. I still like duck hunt. I still like Zelda. I still like the end of Super Mario 3 where Princess Peach says the princess has been taken to another castle.

I feel bad for the newer generation of gamers who are being brought up on games where graphics outrule fun. The new games that take months of learning how to play to become great at.

I babysit my 2 year old nephew every thursday night. This kid was digging through my closet a while ago and found a copy of Super Mario Bros/Duck Hunt. He pulled it out and asked what it was. He handed it to me and I laughed and said "This game is ten times older than you are."

He looked up at me holding the game and smiled as he said, "I want to play old game!"

He's young enough where he doesn't see it as a graphically handicapped game, he sees the fun in it, and he has a blast playing the games of my past. He sat there laughing and smileing for hours, untill he dropped the controller on my old NES. When the controller hit it, the game popped up and the screen started blinking. He looked at me with a sad look in his eyes and said he was sorry for "breaking old game". I laughed and got the game working again. I chose duckhunt instead and handed him the gun.

He started off poorly, but soon enough those ducks were scared of him. He managed to get to Level 7 when he finally died. He looked at me and screamed at how the dog was laughing at him and he started laughing aswell.

Later he was playing Mario 3 and he was dancing to the music and just having a ball. Sure he never even completed the first level by himself, but it was neat watching how each life he would get just a little further into the level. The game is very simple, but it has it's little challanges in it that makes the game fun.

Then it was bed time. I got him put to bed and then turned off the NES. The next week he came running into my house screaming "Anthony! Anthony!" and when he finally found me he said "I want play old game!"

That feeling right there. That's why Nintendo is who they are. 30 years after Super Mario Bros came out on the NES, it's still bringing joy to my home. It's still making my nephew laugh and watching him have fun with this makes me happy. That feeling is why I wrote this, and that feeling is why I'm thanking them now.

Thank you Nintendo.

Just goes to show you...NES Lives. :P
"After a great workout, you'll happily go hit the weight room, or add extra miles, or eat spinach and broccoli. But what will you do when you're feeling like crap, or all your friends are going out, or it's pouring rain, or you're running poorly? To keep striving over the course of years, you need to smooth out the natural highs and lows of your desire, so that you have a constant and unrelenting force that drives you off the sofa and out to run. Every day. Twice."

Glad you guys enjoyed it, I like writing.

Writing doesn't have to follow all the rules. Think about Dr. Suess for example. He was supposed to use words from a list of like 250 "easy learning" words in his books to help kids learn how to read. His books were horrible so he put in things that weren't words to make the books interesting.

I grew up with a SNES, but I have very faint memories of Zelda and SMB 3. I don't know where or when I played them, but I remember them being awesome. If SMB 3 is going to be on the Wii VC, i'll download it. I don't have a Wii yet, but I will soon.

Maybe I'll buy a NES afterwards.

Aww, that was a great story.
I totally agree too; games were much better when they were simple. Now everything's so complex and no one cares about the actual game anymore. And graphics are overrated.

Reading this reminds me of the Angry Nintendo Nerd. Look him up yourself, don't feel like posting a link.

i actually play my nes.

Same here. I grew up during the SNES era, but my family had our NES and SNES hooked up at the same time. We really played SNES a lot more, but I remember one time, my mom was playing the original Zelda. I came down to the basement (where the systems were) and stole the controller away from her. I ended up deleting her first save file, where she had gotten the farthest.

She was so mad at me after that. It was funny because I actually understood what I was doing (I was only like 1 or 2, but I understood how to delete a file). She didn't know that, though. She just kinda yelled at me for a bit...I still remember it. : )
